Krishna Janmashtami 2026: Date, Puja & Significance

The birth of Lord Krishna

Krishna Janmashtami celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna, the eighth avatar of Vishnu. It is observed on the Ashtami of the dark fortnight of Bhadrapada — the day Krishna is believed to have been born at midnight.

Because of the midnight birth, the festival is celebrated through the night with fasting, devotional singing, the swinging of the infant Krishna’s cradle, and a joyful puja at the stroke of twelve.

The Significance of Krishna Janmashtami

Krishna was born in a prison in Mathura to Devaki and Vasudeva. His uncle, the tyrant king Kamsa, had been warned that Devaki’s eighth child would end his reign, and had imprisoned the couple. On the night of Krishna’s birth, the prison doors opened and Vasudeva carried the infant across the river Yamuna to safety in Gokul.

Krishna’s life unfolds through beloved tales — his childhood pranks and the stealing of butter, his lifting of Mount Govardhan, his counsel to Arjuna on the battlefield of Kurukshetra, recorded as the Bhagavad Gita.

The Bhagavad Gita gives the festival its deeper meaning. Krishna teaches the path of duty, devotion and right action — that one should act without attachment to the fruits of action. Janmashtami celebrates not only a birth but the timeless wisdom Krishna brought into the world.
