Hartalika Teej 2026: Date, Vrat & Significance
The fast for marital happiness
Hartalika Teej is one of the most important vrats observed by women. It falls on the third day of the bright fortnight of Bhadrapada, the day before Ganesh Chaturthi.
Married women keep the fast for the well-being of their husbands, while unmarried women observe it praying for a good husband. It is known for being among the strictest fasts — traditionally kept without food or water.
Hartalika Teej 2026 Date
Hartalika Teej 2026 is on Sunday, 13 September 2026. It is observed on Bhadrapada Shukla Tritiya — the Tritiya tithi of the Shukla paksha in the lunar month of Bhadrapada.
Hindu festival dates follow the lunar calendar and can vary by a day between regions and traditions. Always confirm the date and timings with your local panchang.
The Significance of Hartalika Teej
The festival honours Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva. Its name comes from harat (abduction) and aalika (female friend): in the legend, Parvati’s friends carried her away to a forest so she could devote herself to penance for Shiva rather than be married to another against her wish.
In the forest, Parvati made a Shiva linga of sand and worshipped it with deep devotion through a rigorous fast. Moved by her resolve, Shiva accepted her as his wife.
Hartalika Teej therefore celebrates devotion, determination and the union of Shiva and Parvati. Women keep the fast in remembrance of Parvati’s steadfastness, praying for the same blessing of a happy and lasting marriage.
